Torquay United boss Paul Buckle hailed the talent of loan signing Jake Thomson after the Gulls' 3-0 home win over Cheltenham on Tuesday.
Thomson, 20, scored Torquay's third goal and provided the assist for their second, in a man of the match display.
"Jake was outstanding," Buckle told BBC Devon. "I've been working really hard to switch him on and try to make him a complete player."
Thomson moved to Torquay on loan from Southampton in late October.
Buckle said: "A lot of the young players that come to us can sometimes think it's going to be easy.
"It's not, it's a tough tough league and they need to get the hard work ethic right."
Buckle's uncompromising approach to training has evidently been seized upon by Thomson, who appears eager to prove his mettle in League Two.

"We know what Thomson can do when he's got the ball," said Buckle
"I think he showed all of that against Cheltenham. Some of his runs were outstanding."
The Torquay manager also reserved mention for another loan signing Chris Zebroski, who moved to Plainmoor from Wycombe last month.
He said: "In Zebrowski we had a real threat up top. A lot of pace and some wonderful pass and movements first half and second half."
