Darryl Duffy's first-half goal proved enough to give Bristol Rovers victory over unlucky Exeter in a competitive West Country derby.
Duffy pounced on 33 minutes when Jo Kuffour's low shot was saved, leaving the striker with an open goal.
But the visitors hit the woodwork twice through Richard Logan in the first half and Alex Russell in the second half.
Rovers keeper Mikkel Andersen also made a fine 70th-minute save from Ryan Harley's 25-yard volley.
Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol:
"We're very pleased with the clean sheet, they put us under pressure and we had to be very good in our box.
"We know we didn't fire at all, we didn't get our passing going and they'll feel hard done by leaving without anything, which I can understand.
"We've tried a lot of combinations at the back, and there's been a lot of coaching and hard work by the players so that's one pleasing aspect of the evening."
