Gordon Greer absence leaves Swindon Town boss 'gutted'

Swindon Town manager Danny Wilson says he is "gutted" for skipper Gordon Greer who is banned for Saturday's League One play-off final against Millwall.

The 29-year-old centre-back was sent off during the semi-final penalty shootout win over Charlton Athletic.

"I'm gutted for him quite honestly," Wilson told BBC Wiltshire. "He's been immense at certain times this year.

"He would have been head and shoulders above anyone on that pitch because that's what he wanted so badly."

Wilson added: "He's obviously very, very disappointed but he knows that sometimes you are judged on split-second decisions and unfortunately the decision he made wasn't a good one.

He still has a contribution to make in and around the game and will be very valuable to us

"That doesn't take away from the fact that where we are has been achieved with a great deal of help from Gordon."

Greer was dismissed for a challenge on Charlton's Deon Burton which Wilson says was out of character.

"It wasn't overly rash. He put his foot up to win the ball and carried through. The referee called it reckless and he [Greer] has to pay the consequences," he said.

"It's very unlike him to do something like that."

One consolation for Greer in the countdown to Saturday is that Wilson still considers his captain to be an important part of the team at Wembley.

"He still has a contribution to make in and around the game and will be very valuable to us," he added.
