Wilson targets improved defence

Swindon manager Danny Wilson says improving his team's defence is his top priority this summer.

Town conceded 71 goals last season, the fifth worst record in League One, as they avoided relegation by four points.

Wilson told BBC Wiltshire: "All the successful teams, at whatever level, don't concede goals.

"You want to get the spine of your team right, so the goalkeeper and the defence are the areas which I'd really like to get people in straight away."

Swindon have already offered former Doncaster defender Gordon Greer a contract, after his successful three-month loan spell at the County Ground last season.

The ideal way forward for me is to bring players in who've been there, but still have a lot to offer and have a lot of hunger

Wilson is also looking to sign a new goalkeeper and at least one full-back this summer, after releasing 13 players last week.

"You've got to learn lessons from the season you've just had, and conceding goals at the alarming rate that we have didn't win us football games," he said.

"If we can arrest that, we'll have half a chance."

The Swindon manager is also keen to add further experience to a squad which lacked real leaders at times last season.

"The ideal way forward for me is to bring players in who've been there, but still have a lot to offer and have a lot of hunger," he concluded.
