Watkins says costs must come down at the County Ground
Swindon Town chief executive Nick Watkins has confirmed the club will have a smaller squad next season.
More than half of Danny Wilson's side are out of contract in the summer and he is expected to have a clearout at the end of a disappointing campaign.
Watkins told BBC Wiltshire the aim is to have fewer but better players on the books at the County Ground.
"It's a big squad which needs trimming down, we need to bring in 'best of breed' in every area," he said.
The players that are out of contract this summer include first-team regulars Phil Smith, Peter Brezovan, Jack Smith, Jamie Vincent, Craig Easton, Barry Corr and Pat Kanyuka.
Wilson has not revealed who he would like to keep but Watkins thinks the manager has already made his decision.
"I think he's pretty much got a clear idea of who sits on the left hand side of the piece of paper and who's on the right," he added.
"What Danny will do, with great professionalism and consideration, is have a conversation with them and those that he doesn't require I'm sure he will treat in a sensitive way."
Jon-Paul McGovern has also raised the possibility of moving on if he does not figure in Wilson's plans, even though he has another year left on his deal, there has also been speculation about the potential departure of Jerel Ifil.
Swindon have already offered a permanent deal to defender Gordon Greer, who impressed during his three-month loan spell from Doncaster.
