Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton says he might have to start his search for the club's next manager again.
Fitton says the last few days have been frustrating, with the club close to appointing their chosen man.
But it had proved more difficult than originally anticipated to negotiate acceptable terms for the candidate to leave his current club, he explained.
BBC Radio Swindon understands the favoured man is Newcastle United academy director Richard Money.
In total, Swindon received around 50 applications for the post and interviewed about a dozen candidates - some several times.
They had hoped to have the new boss in place before Saturday's home game against Yeovil.
Fitton and the board of directors will now take a few days to consider their options, with potential new managers still becoming available.
