Southend have brought in former Sheffield Wednesday defender Peter Gilbert on trial.
The former Plymouth 26-year-old was released by the Owls after three years at the club having failed to hold down a regular first-team spot.
His arrival would further bolster the Blues' defensive options after the loan signings of Matt Heath and John White.
Meanwhile, the Blues still have concerns over the fitness of skipper Adam Barrett, who has a knee injury.
