Southend sign duo from Colchester

John White
White has made over 100 league appearances for Colchester

Southend United have signed Matt Heath and John White on a month's loan from Essex rivals Colchester United.

Both defenders have fallen out of favour since Paul Lambert took charge of the U's last October.

The Blues are short of defensive options as Peter Clarke joined Huddersfield this summer and captain Adam Barrett is injured.

Heath and White will be at Roots Hall until 30 August, but the deal could be extended if both clubs agree terms.

Two more Colchester players are on trial with other clubs as the U's look to trim their squad before the season starts.

Full-back Phil Ifil is with fellow League One side MK Dons and striker Jamie Guy is at League Two side Port Vale, with Vale keen to complete a loan deal for the 22-year-old.

Southend have chosen not to offer deals to defenders Giele John and Harry Worley, who have been on trial with the club this week.
