Southend face an anxious wait on the fitness of defender Adam Barrett, after he limped out of Wednesday night's friendly with Ipswich.
The 29-year-old skipper is currently the only recognised centre-back at Roots Hall.
Blues boss Steve Tilson told the club website: "It is too early to tell how bad Adam's injury is at this stage.
"Hopefully he is only going to be out for a week or so before joining back in because we need him."
In Barrett's absence, Southend were forced to pair right-back Simon Francis and centre midfielder Jean-Francois Christophe in the centre of defence.
