Kevin McIntyre upbeat despite Shrewsbury Town release

McIntyre is undertaking the Three Peaks with three team-mates

Kevin McIntyre has promised to bounce back following his release by Graham Turner after four years at Shrewsbury.

The midfielder, who made 117 starts in four seasons, was the highest-profile player to be let go after Town's defeat by Torquay in the League Two play-offs.

"I've loved it at Shrewsbury. I've got great memories and made good friends," McIntyre told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"I'd prepared myself for the worst, but now I'm looking forward to the future and seeing which clubs might want me."

McIntyre was the highest profile player of seven to be freed by Shrewsbury, as Town boss Turner starts his preparations for a new assault on promotion to League One.

The former Tranmere trainee broke into league football with Doncaster in 1998, becoming a regular there and then at Chester, Macclesfield and Shrewsbury - where he became a firm fans' favourite.

His personal highlight with Shrewsbury was coming back from a broken leg to score the late goal at Bury in the 2009 play-off semi-final second leg to earn a penalty shoot-out and then a Wembley trip - which Town lost to Gillingham.

"My big moment was obviously the Bury moment," said McIntyre. "I must have spoken about that hundreds of times.

"But I've enjoyed my whole time at Shrewsbury - playing under different managers, playing for great fans, and playing for a great club too.

"The hardest thing was saying goodbye to everyone - to the lads, to the staff, to those who work in the office and so on - because I've been at Shrewsbury for years.

"I went home to my wife and kids and sulked around a bit but, 24 hours later, it's a new day, I'm fully fit and it's just a matter of waiting to see what clubs make me offers'."

McIntyre has signed off his Shrewsbury career by undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge - a charity assault on the UK's three highest mountains - with three other players: Dave Raven, who has also been released, Nicky Wroe and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.

"The timing of the Three Peaks Challenge couldn't have come at a better time," he said, "it'll be another great memory to take away."
