Manager Paul Simpson remains hopeful Shrewsbury Town can make the play-offs despite winning just one of their last 11 matches in League Two.
Town dropped out of the play-off zone into eighth place after being held to a 1-1 draw against Rochdale at the Prostar stadium.
"We're running out of games and we've got to keep going and start to do our job better," he told BBC Shropshire.
"It's still there for us, we've still got an opportunity."
"I believe the players we have in there are better than the league position is giving us," Simpson added.
Grant Holt pounced to lob in a right-footed shot at the start of the second half but Dale brought on a third striker and Chris Dagnall fired past Luke Daniels from 18 yards.
Shrewsbury are a point behind Chesterfield who occupy the final play-off place but they will need to improve their away record if they are to make into the play-offs.
Town have won just one away game all season against Exeter and they face two tricky away trips in their last three games against Rotherham and fellow play-off contenders Dagenham & Redbridge.
