Salisbury boss Tommy Widdrington keen to keep squad

Widdrington led Salisbury to 12th in his first full season in charge

Salisbury City boss Tommy Widdrington hopes the majority of his squad will play for the side next season.

Widdrington is discussing new deals with some of his out-of-contract players after the side finished 12th in the Blue Square Premier season.

The club survived despite a ten-point deduction for entering administration.

"You wouldn't pull apart a squad that's just amassed you 72 points in a hurry. Everyone has given me every last sinew," Widdrington told BBC Wiltshire.

If the Whites had not had points deducted, the side would have ended the campaign in sixth position.

The squad currently includes several potential transfer targets for Blue Square Premier and Football League clubs, but Widdrington maintained that he was confident he could hold onto the majority of his squad.

"If you finish with the season we've had there should be people sniffing around our players, but unless its Stevenage, York, Rushden, Oxford or Luton is there anywhere better to go in the Conference at the moment? I suggest not.

"Players want to be here. They've hinted to me that they do want to stay.

"The whole club has got to be flexible and there will be changes. It's a very difficult decision (to let a player go) but it's happened to me. I've been promoted and been let go. It's football.

Widdrington continued: "Certain players will be able to improve further, certain players will have played to their absolute limits to do what they've done this season.

"Whether they're here next season or whether they're not they deserve to have hats doffed at them as they walk through Salisbury city centre," he said.
