Rushden and Diamonds boss Justin Edinburgh has backed Sam Smith to be a regular starter this season.
The 20-year-old forward has largely been used as a substitute for the first XI since coming up through the youth ranks at Nene Park.
Edinburgh told BBC Radio Northampton: "I've got a feeling about Sam this year. It's time for him to take the shirt and make it his own.
"He's starting to realise how good he is and the assets that he has."
Smith has scored ten goals for the Diamonds and was on target in the 2-0 pre-season friendly win against Brackley Town.
