Barry Ferguson provided double delight for Rangers fans when he revealed that he wants to stay with the Ibrox club.

The Scotland midfielder led his club to a Scottish Cup triumph over Celtic at Hampden Park.

And then the club captain revealed to BBC Scotland that he will start re-signing talks with chairman David Murray next Tuesday.

It has long been expected that Ferguson would be sold at the end of the season by an unusually cash-strapped Rangers.

There had even been suggestions that the player himself wanted to leave and try his luck in the English Premiership.

His brother, Derek, who left Rangers to play in England with Sunderland, has advised him to follow suit while still young.

But Barry said: "I want to stay on.

"I will have talks with the chairman next week and hope to be back for pre-season training."

Ferguson had been struggling to make the final through injury.

But he made the starting line-up and played a skipper's role. Ferguson controlled midfield and scored Rangers' second equaliser from a glorious, curling free kick.

There were representatives from a number of Premiership clubs at Hampden, with Man of the Match Ferguson their most likely target.

Speculation has suggested that Ferguson had an agreement with Rangers that he could leave at the end of the season.

However, it now appears that Rangers could hold on to their prize asset, if they can afford to do without the millions of pounds his departure would gather.

"I am captain of one of the biggest cubs in Europe so there's no need for any more," Ferguson said.

"But I will meet the chairman on Tuesday with my agent John Viola and we'll talk about it.

"It's not a tough decision for me because I know what I want but I'm not giving any clues.

"This is not just about me. I need to find out what the chairman thinks. If a crazy bid comes in then he may want to accept it," he added.

Manager Alex McLeish said: "A lot of people will have been impressed with that performance today.

"If it's right for Barry and right for Rangers then these things will happen.

"I wouldn't like to put a price on his head but there will be a few teams interested.

McLeish wnet on to explain how highly he rated his skipper.

"Barry is right up there with the best in England and Italy. It's up to him. Players have the power now.

"But I hope he wants a crack at the championship next season."
