Mark Grew expects big changes at Port Vale in summer

Port Vale caretaker manager Mark Grew has called for big changes at Vale Park if they are to challenge for promotion from League Two next season.

Vale were the early front-runners in the division but finished 11th.

"I think it needs a massive overhaul," Grew told BBC Radio Stoke. "The league never lies so that tells you this squad is not good enough to go up.

"It needs better players. Players that don't want to give their all for Port Vale should be sent on their way."

Grew called some of the players "a disgrace" following their 1-0 defeat by Barnet, a result that saw the Bees guarantee their Football League survival.

Vale have won just two of their 10 matches since caretaker boss Grew took charge, following the departure of manager Jim Gannon in March.

Grew has 12 months left on his current contract at Vale Park and, although he is unsure where his future lies, he said he would be happy to return to his old role as manager of the club's youth team.

"I really enjoy working with the youth team because of their enthusiasm, their will to work and their will to learn," added Grew.

"If only that would go into the first team. I don't know how some of them [in the first-team squad] get motivated or enjoy themselves.

"They'll realise, some of them, when it's taken away and they haven't got a club, 'if only I'd have worked a little bit harder and taken it a little bit more serious'."
