Vale have won one of their eight matches under caretaker boss Grew

Mark Grew does not believe Port Vale will have any trouble in attracting a new manager to the club in the summer.

A 1-0 defeat away at Stevenage on Monday all but ended Vale's hopes of reaching the League Two play-offs.

Grew has been in caretaker charge since March and told BBC Radio Stoke: "People are looking for jobs in football.

"There are a lot of managers out there that haven't got jobs. I'm sure they'll come in, look at Port Vale and see what an excellent club this is."

He continued: "Whoever gets offered the job, I think they will snap their hands off to get it."

Vale began the season in fantastic form under Micky Adams, building on the foundations of a solid 2009/10 season to lead the table for much of the first half of the campaign.

Jim Gannon took over at Vale Park in January following Adams' departure to Sheffield United , but his eventful reign lasted just 74 days, by which time Vale had dropped out of the play-off places.

Grew has been in caretaker charge since 21 March, but has conceded that he does not expect to given the role on a permanent basis.

Of their 24 league matches in 2011, Vale have won only six, drawn eight and lost 10.

"The lads have got to believe in themselves a bit more," said Grew. "Maybe the things that have gone on at the club have affected them more than we thought.

"We couldn't back to what we did at the start of the season. I knew the things we had to do to get them right but there wasn't really enough time."

Vale are six points from a play-off place with two matches left to play, but their hugely inferior goal difference means it is almost impossible for them to finish in the top seven.

It leaves Vale supporters contemplating a fourth successive year in League Two and Grew has sympathy for them.

"I feel for them because I've got as much feeling for the club and I know how they're feeling. They're hurting at the minute and it's not a nice feeling."
