Glover Jr happy to repay faith

Port Vale striker Danny Glover says he is happy to repay the faith shown in him by father and manager Dean, after scoring his first goal of the season.

Glover Jr has come under fire from some sections of the Valiants' fans but scored the first goal in the 2-1 win over Rochdale at Vale Park on Sunday.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I was really excited and relieved.

"If people don't like me then I can't do anything about that, but if I keep scoring I can change their minds."

Glover, 19, celebrated his goal by revealing a T-shirt that read "Happy birthday, Dad" in reference to his father's 45th birthday on Monday, an act for which he was booked.

That was to cost the younger Glover dear later on, as a second booking for a challenge on Rochdale's Tom Kennedy saw him dismissed.

"The yellow card for the shirt was fair enough and that's what cost me," he said.

"I didn't think the tackle deserved a booking but it's something I need to learn from."

Meanwhile, father Dean said he was pleased his son had found the back of net and hoped the goal would help silence the critics.

"He's being crying out for a goal to give him a lift and to get some of the fans off his back.

"I'm pleased for him and it was a lovely birthday present but his over-enthusiasm at the end cost him a red card."

The Vale boss also insisted that the selection of his son was made purely on merit.

"He's got a good footballing brain, but because he's my son he's under more pressure than most.

"The fans who don't like him make themselves known but hopefully Danny can go on to get many more goals for Port Vale."
