Port Vale manager Dean Glover said the Valiants must improve defensively following the 3-0 loss at Bury in League Two on Saturday.
Ben Futcher put the hosts ahead inside two minutes, with two goals from Glynn Hurst securing the points at Gigg Lane.
Glover told BBC Radio Stoke: "We can't give teams as good as Bury the chance to get a goal in front.
"As long as we're giving the likes of Bury the chance to score, we're going to get punished."
The result leaves Vale, who were relegated from League One last season, lying 15th in the Football League's bottom tier.
But Glover said he is confident he can improve the fortunes of the Burslem club.

"I treat the players how I think they deserve to be treated and we will turn things around our way."
Glover took over at Vale Park in October following the sacking of Lee Sinnott and said he feels the Valiants have improved during his time in charge.
"We've come a long way in a short space of time and have managed to turn results around," said Glover.
"Now we need to build some momentum again and that comes from the 11 on the pitch working harder than they are.
"The players need to realise they aren't going to stay in a game unless they defend well, until that happens we won't have a chance."
