Peterborough United have signed Northern Ireland midfielder Grant McCann on a three-year contract.

McCann, 30, turned down a new deal at Championship side Scunthorpe United, where he scored 18 goals in 99 league games, for League One football.

"I'd had a couple of offers from some Championship and League One clubs," McCann told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"But once I'd spoken to Gary Johnson and Barry Fry here at Peterborough, this was the club I wanted to be at."

He added: "I know what people expect in this league and it's something I'm looking forward to. I am dropping down a division, but I'm dropping down to play with an experienced manager."

McCann, a former West Ham trainee, has become boss Johnson's second summer signing after striker Dave Hibbert penned a three-year deal.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry said: "From day one the manager identified Grant as a key signing and spent several weeks talking to him.

"The manager was keen to get the signing sorted as soon as possible. I have no doubt that if Gary was not the manager, Grant would not be here," Fry added.

"We have to thank the chairman Darragh MacAnthony because he has backed the manager superbly in the transfer market and I am sure everyone will agree Grant is a fantastic signing."

Meanwhile it is expected that Johnson will continue his recruitment with the signing of right-back Mark Little in the coming days.
