Peterborough United midfielder Dean Keates admits he did not expect team-mate Micah Hyde to be placed on the transfer list.
Hyde, 33, who lost the captaincy over the summer, has made just five appearances for Posh this season.
Keates told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I think a lot of the lads are surprised as Micah has been playing the last few weeks.
"But the gaffer's paid to make decisions and it's his call."
Hyde was left out of the squad for the FA Cup win over AFC Hornchurch on Sunday and could leave the club on loan before the 25 November deadline.
Keates himself is closing in on a return to full fitness following a seven-week injury lay-off.
The former Walsall man has been struggling with a knee problem but was back in the Posh starting line-up on Sunday.
"I've had a frustrating seven weeks," he said, "but I've got 90 minutes under my belt now and there's been no reaction.
"Hopefully I'll give the gaffer a good selection headache and keep pushing for a starting place every week."
