Oxford have won only four out of 15 games in League Two this season

Oxford boss Chris Wilder has defended captain James Constable from criticism among sections of United's support over a perceived lack of goals.

The 26-year-old striker has failed to find the back of the net in his last three games but has already scored eight times this season.

Wilder told BBC Oxford: "I think for him to get any kind of stick is scandalous. He's our top scorer.

"He gives his all for this club. He's just going through a dip."

Constable has been the U's top scorer for the last two seasons with 24 and 26 goals.

"It's so black and white, we are either heroes or absolutely useless, clueless, human beings," Wilder continued.

"Yes we all see what he does and the chances he misses. Does he need help? Of course he does. Do we all need help? Of course we do."

Oxford had feared that Constable might miss Oxford's match against Rotherham this weekend because of illness.

But he was at training on Thursday and has been declared fit following an examination by the club's medical staff.
