Oxford United defender Rhys Day returns from injury

Oxford United central defender Rhys Day has made a return from injury in a 2-1 friendly victory over a Fulham XI.

The Welshman has been struggling with a tendonitis in his knee since helping Oxford back into the Football League.

He played in 70 minutes of the match at Fulham's training ground and came up against England striker Andy Johnson, who is also on the comeback trail.

Coach Mickey Lewis told BBC Oxford: "He's been out for a while, but is a good pro and has done his rehab well."

With Oxford facing a defensive injury crisis, Oxford could be expected to rush 28-year-old Day back into the squad for Saturday's match against his old club Aldershot, but Lewis says that might be too soon.

"We have to see how he reacts in the next couple of days - but at least he's on the way back," he said.

Mark Creighton has made a return to light training after breaking his toe at Cheltenham a week ago - but only has an outside chance of being fit for the Aldershot game. Another central defender Jake Wright seems certain to miss the game as he continues to recover from a back problem.

Lewis says a second successive home game is a bonus for Oxford, after beating League Two leaders Port Vale last Saturday.

"I dare say we will have the same sort of crowd this weekend. Our support is always strong. Aldershot usually bring a few to our place as well. We're looking forward to a really good atmosphere," he added.
