Hughes joined the Magpies on a free transfer

Sven-Goran Eriksson watched from the stands as Notts County beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 in a pre-season friendly.

Goals from Luke Rodgers and Lee Hughes put Notts ahead, before Lewis McGugan pulled one back for the Reds.

Magpies manager Ian McParland told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I'm pleased with our fitness levels, we scored two great goals and moved the ball around well."

Forest boss Billy Davies said: "We played a lot of very good stuff at times but didn't take our chances."

Eriksson, the Magpies' new director of football, was paraded on the pitch 10 minutes before kick-off in front of a crowd of nearly 13,000, and the Swede was given a rousing reception by supporters.

McParland added: "I thought we were excellent all the way through. We scored some good goals but lets not get carried away.

"Lee Hughes has come in and is still lacking a bit of fitness as he has not been involved with us from the start and that was his first game. Considering that, he did excellent and that is what Lee Hughes is all about."

Billy Davies was left to rue missed chances with only McGugan's strike to show for their efforts.

"We had 17 efforts at goal with five on target and they had four efforts on goal with three on target," he said.

"We're still rusty around the goal and we know that. We had enough chances in the first-half to kill the game off.

"You can't have that amount of chances and not hit the target, and that is really where the problem lies."
