Hughes began his career with Kidderminster Harriers
Notts County have made their first signing since the arrival of Sven-Goran Eriksson with striker Lee Hughes penning a two-year contract.
The 33-year-old was available on a free transfer after being released by Oldham Athletic back in May.
"It is proved now that Notts County are an up and coming club," Hughes told BBC Radio Nottingham.
"I want to help them get promoted this season and hopefully I can help them step in the right direction."
Hughes scored 25 goals in 51 starts for the Latics, but ended last season on loan at Championship side Blackpool.
He boasts an impressive record of 141 goals in 344 career appearances and has cost just under £8 million in cumulative transfer fees.
Manager Ian McParland said: "It's been a long time coming but we're delighted Lee is coming to Notts County.
"He is a goalscorer, he's experienced and he fits the bill for what we need at Meadow Lane. To attract a player of Lee's calibre is another major coup for us."
Hughes has been allotted the number 9 shirt and is set to make his Magpies debut in Saturday's friendly with local-rivals Nottingham Forest.
