Gilbert has represented Wales at Under-21 level

Northampton Town have signed free agent left-back Peter Gilbert until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has played 150 senior matches in his career for Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City, Doncaster Rovers and Oldham.

Cobblers boss Ian Sampson told the club website: "We have had a good look at him. He is a left footer and that helps the balance of the squad.

"He's a good defender with a lot of experience of playing at a high level."

Sampson added: "We have been looking to strengthen defensively and I am sure he will prove a good addition."

Gilbert was a free agent after leaving Oldham earlier in the season.
