Gary Lineker is hoping to make a bid to rescue financially-troubled Leicester by the end of this week.

The former Foxes striker and England captain is part of a consortium set up to try and save his old club.

Along with associates Greg Clarke and Jon Holmes, Lineker believes he can raise enough capital to help put the Division One side back on an even keel.

A spokesperson said on Monday: "We held a very successful meeting of potential shareholders this afternoon.

"As a result we are now confident of our funding levels and we will be making a formal offer to the administrators by close of business this week."

Leicester were relegated last season but are currently second in Division One behind Portsmouth.
