Southampton's Matthew Oakley struck twice to sink Millwall and seal an FA Cup fifth round tie at home to Norwich City.

But Gordon Strachan's side needed extra-time to fend off the challenge of First Divison Millwall on a typically robust night at the New Den.

Oakley gave Saints a first half lead - before Steven Reid equalised for Millwall before the interval.

But Southampton were the better side and were rewarded with Oakley's winner 12 minutes into the extra period.

It left Millwall boss Mark McGhee rueing Kevin Davies' last minute equaliser at St Mary's that forced a replay.

Francis Benali was still deputising for injured England defender Wayne Bridge - and he almost gifted Millwall a dream start after three minutes.

Benali's attempted clearance was driven straight at teenager Charley Hearn, and it needed a brilliant recovering tackle from the veteran to rectify his own mistake.

Dennis Wise's frustration then bubbled to the surface and he was rightly booked by referee Mark Halsey for a crude hack at Fabrice Fernandes.

Southampton took the lead after 21 minutes, courtesy of a brilliant strike by Oakley.

Anders Svensson was the creator with a clever chest down, and Oakley completed the job with a powerful drive that flashed past Millwall goalkeeper Tony Warner from 25 yards.

Southampton looked set to build on their advantage as they dominated with a smooth passing game, but Millwall surprised the Premiership side with an equaliser eight minutes before the interval.

Steve Claridge - once the manager at Southampton's south coast rivals Portsmouth - exposed Saints with a run down the right flank.

He found Reid, and even though Antti Niemi brilliantly saved his first effort, he was poweless to stop him scoring from the rebound.

Southampton's James Beattie was cautioned after 43 minutes following a nasty clash with Warner, which left the Lions' keeper incensed.

Strachan's side continued to have the better of things after the break, with Jo Tessem narrowly off target.

Millwall responded through the tireless Claridge, and he was unlucky to see a shot on the turn well saved by Niemi.

Saints' top scorer Beattie had been kept at arm's length, but he almost broke the deadlock when he headed against the post late on.

It meant the game went into extra-time - and Oakley was the man who broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the additional period.

Once again it was a crisp finish from the promising midfielder, who beat Warner low into his bottom right hand corner.

Millwall removed veteran Wise and sent on Ben May in a bid to revive their hopes - but it was to no avail.
