| Monday, 3 February, 2003, 14:56 GMT Venables stays at Leeds ![]() Venables insists he is staying put for the season Leeds United boss Terry Venables has confirmed he will stay at Elland Road - despite the controversial sale of Jonathan Woodgate to Newcastle. Venables told his players on Sunday he would see out the current campaign at the crisis-hit club. And he confirmed he will not quit as he prepared for the FA Cup fourth round replay against Gillingham at Elland Road on Tuesday. The news came as Leeds reached a financial settlement with Venables' successor David O'Leary after his summer sacking. The ex-England boss Venables had previously hinted he might quit following the controversial 9m departure of Woodgate. Venables complained the board had treated him like "a patsy", but he said: "I have had a few things to get off my chest and I've done that now. "I think what I have decided is the grown up thing to do. "I think we have got to put it behind us now and not revisit it at all because it is a very delicate situation. "We have got to get on with the job. We are professionals and we have to have the same attitude as we go forward. "I know how the fans feel and I think we have got a lot in common in that area. "I'd now like the fans to do what they have been doing all year and support the team - as they have been doing - because they have been magnificent." After a crisis-ridden week, Venables has been boosted by news that striker Alan Smith will sign an extension to his current contract to keep him at the club until 2006. |
