| Monday, 3 February, 2003, 16:55 GMT Smith to sign fresh deal
The 22-year-old England international had been tipped to leave Elland Road at the end of the season in the wake of Jonathan Woodgate's 9m sale to Newcastle. But BBC Sport Online understands further talks between Leeds and Smith's representatives will take place on Tuesday, with an agreement close. Smith is keen to sign an extension to keep him at the club until the end of the 2006 season. The deal is believed to be worth 40,000 a week. Smith's representative Alex Black said: "Alan is happy at Leeds and wants to stay. "Provided we can come to the right agreement, he will sign a new contract." Meanwhile Harry Kewell will not rock the Elland Road boat after declaring he is happy at Leeds.
Leeds' fans feared that the exodus of top names would prompt Kewell to jump ship. But his agent Bernie Mandic said: "Harry is not looking to move anywhere. "Harry still wants to stay at Leeds. He is having a very good season there so why would he want to leave?" "What has happened is not something I am concerned about and Harry has not voiced his concerns. "As a team unit, everything is fine there and I have not heard anything to the contrary. "The situation is between Peter Ridsdale and Terry Venables. "And contrary to some reports that Leeds wanted to sell him, they have never indicated that to me nor to Harry." |
