Hamilton eyes Ipswich post
Bryan Hamilton
Hamilton worked under Burley at Portman Road
Bryan Hamilton has joined the list of potential candidates for the manager's job at Ipswich.

Former Arsenal and Norwich boss Bruce Rioch has already told BBC Sport Online he is keen to fill the gap left by the sacking of George Burley.

Rotherham's Ronnie Moore thought he was the Suffolk club's top target, only to be told that Ipswich had not made an approach for him.

And former Northern Ireland boss Hamilton, who served as Burley's first-team coach at Portman Road until May, also says he would jump at the chance to succeed him.

I know it's a good place to be and a good place to work

Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks confirmed he will draw up a list in the next couple of days and contact the relevant parties by the middle of next week.

Hamilton is likely to join Rioch, current caretaker-boss Tony Mowbray, Rushden and Diamonds chief Brian Talbot and possibly Moore on the shortlist.

Asked if he would accept the job if offered, Hamilton said: "Oh yes, I'd most definitely take it.

"Ipswich is my club - and the manager's job would be a tough job but a good one.

"They haven't invited applications yet, so I'll wait and see if they do.

"I worked there for two of the last four years as first-team coach and would like to be part of it again.

There has been a great deal of interest
Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks

"I joined George last November and stayed until the end of the season, when I left purely because of the financial situation.

"Ipswich were in a difficult position and had to make serious cuts. I was one of those.

"I never expected to leave and I was disappointed to leave. But I know it's a good place to be and a good place to work."

Hamilton managed Northern Ireland from 1994 to 1998 but lasted just eight months in charge of Norwich two years ago.

"There has been a great deal of interest," Sheepshanks told the East Anglian Daily Times.

"We will speak to people who are already available and contact clubs about permission to talk to others we're interested in."
