Smithies has represented England at Under-19 level
Huddersfield manager Lee Clark says goalkeeper Alex Smithies has the talent and attitude to be a big success.
The 19-year-old kept his first clean sheet of the season in the goalless draw with Brentford on Saturday.
"He has all the attributes to go to the very, very top," the Terriers boss told BBC Radio Leeds.
"He is a fantastic young man and has a great work ethic. With the help of our coach John Vaughan, he will continue to improve because he wants to improve."
