Gills boss Mark Stimson promises improvement next year

If Gillingham survive in League One this season, manager Mark Stimson has promised his side will not be dragged into the relegation scrap again.

The Gills need a point at Wycombe on Saturday to guarantee their safety.

"If we stay up, the club won't be in this position again," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.

"Certain personnel might be available for next season who haven't been this year, and we'll have some new players in to help those we've already got."

One of the players Gillingham have missed most this season is influential defender Simon King.

The 26-year-old, who was their player of the season last year, suffered a serious ankle injury during a pre-season friendly.

Stimson also confirmed he knows who he wants to keep next season.

"I've made my mind up over everybody," he said.

"It could possibly help them if we were to stay in this division because budgets might then be improved a bit and we might be able to spread the new offers out to them.

"Financially it will help a little bit if we stay up, but some of the players have been on very good contracts and unfortunately I don't think we'll be getting too close to those."
