Stimson guided the Gills to promotion from League Two last season

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson believes his side will survive in League One this season as long as they maintain their strong home form.

The Gills are still without an away win after a 4-0 defeat at Millwall and are two points and two places above the relegation zone with five games to go.

"We've got to take responsibility and perform in front of our home fans like we have," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.

"If we do that then I think we'll have enough [to stay up]."

Of Gillingham's five remaining games, three are at home - starting with Brighton on Tuesday.

They then face two of their biggest tests at Priestfield this season when they host play-off hopefuls Leeds and Southampton.

Stimson added: "I'm not nervy. I knew it was going to be like this at the beginning of the season because we don't carry the biggest of squads or finances.

"Once we picked up injuries, what with Simon King missing, it's always going to be difficult.

"I don't like being there. But we've got to get on with it, come into work on Monday, forget about Saturday and look forward. It's in our hands isn't it?"
