Fuller aims to repeat Gills glory

Gillingham captain Barry Fuller hopes to recreate the club's previous play-off glory in Saturday's League Two play-off final.

He was one of 40,000 fans at Wembley for the 2000 Second Division play-off final when the Gills beat Wigan 3-2.

Fuller told BBC Radio Kent: "My dad asked if I wanted to go, I was a follower, and I remember jumping up and down with the rest of them.

"It was a great day out then and I hope to re-enact it at Wembley this year."

Fuller is delighted to be back to full fitness and featuring in the showpiece event after he contracted a bout of pneumonia earlier in the year.

"The end of the season has been a surprise. I didn't expect to play after being ill but the season's been better and better for me," he said.

"The boss has given me the opportunity to lead the team out at Wembley. I am honoured and privileged and I hope to repay that faith by lifting the trophy."

And Fuller is banishing any memory of Gillingham's humiliating 7-0 defeat to Saturday's opponents Shrewsbury just eight months ago.

"You could say it will be payback but we are not going to concentrate on that because that was a freak day," he added.

"That's behind us and who knows, if we perform it could be them on the back end of a result like that."
