Gills stomach bug still a mystery

Mark Bentley

The stomach bug that has been sweeping through the Gillingham squad continues to puzzle the club.

Several players have been substituted over the last few weeks because of the virus - the latest on Tuesday night was striker Mark McCammon.

Club captain Mark Bentley, who has been a recent victim of the bug, said: "Maybe it's what we're eating in the week at training but I'm not sure.

"If you get one bug it seems to filter through the squad."

Bentley added: "It might just be a bug that's got around the club. Five or six of us have had a bit of an upset stomach.

"We've been washing the plates up this week rather than leaving them on the side and using them the next day!"

Manager Mark Stimson revealed the club was in the process of reviewing its catering facilities.

"The food is cooked at the ground and taken to the training ground in a van," said Stimson.

"Maybe something might have been caught on the way up.

"But it's happening too often at the moment and we have got to try and identify it because it's no good having players wanting to come off after 15 or 20 minutes feeling unwell."
