Simon King has been plagued by an ankle injury for weeks
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has revealed that in-form defender Simon King is playing through injury to help the club's promotion bid.
King, 25, went off on Saturday with a recurrence of an ankle problem just before they conceded a Shrewsbury equaliser in the 2-2 draw.
Stimson told BBC Radio Kent: ""It always makes a difference losing Simon, and it's happened time and time again.
"But unfortunately he has got a really bad ankle."
Stimson added: "He went over on his ankle a minute or two before coming off.
"It flared up and we obviously had to get him off the pitch because if we didn't, and he plays on for another 10 or 15 minutes, he could go and miss a few games and we desperately don't want that to happen."
Penalties aside, the Shrewsbury equaliser was the first goal the Gills had conceded in more than nine hours of open play.
The 2-2 draw leaves the Gills, who travel to Notts County on Tuesday, sixth in League Two but level on points with third-placed Rochdale.
BBC Radio Kent will have commentary on 774MW and DAB Digital Radio from 7.45
