Derby County manager Nigel Clough is hoping to sign out-of-contract Norwich City winger Lee Croft.
The Canaries were relegated from the second tier of English football on the final day of the season and Croft, 23, would be free to change clubs.
Clough told BBC East Midlands Today: "We've had discussions with his representatives but it takes time. I'm sure he will be talking to a few clubs.
"We think we need an outside right and Lee is proven at Championship level."
Croft joined the Canaries from Manchester City in the summer of 2006 for £600,000.
