Donington Park was the host of the 1993 European Grand Prix |
Several improvements still need to be made at Donington Park before the track is given the all clear to stage races. An inspection from the Motor Sport Association revealed four minor health and safety issues need to be addressed. Another inspection is due to be held on Friday and track officials have said they are confident the changes can be made overnight. Five races were pulled in April amid safety concerns over work on the track ahead of the 2010 British Grand Prix. The Formula Palmer Audi Championship was cancelled in April along with the Aston Martin Owners' Club event scheduled for 4 May. 'Working hard' The British F3 and British GT meeting planned for the weekend of 25 and 26 April was postponed with an agreement to work towards a new event date later in 2009. The Britcar series event which was due to take place from 1 - 3 May has been moved to Rockingham in Northamptonshire. Donington leaseholder, Simon Gillett, has said he is working hard to minimise disruption. Mr Gillett has also been given until 30 June to ensure crucial paperwork is signed off or permission for the track's £100m revamp will be revoked by North West Leicestershire District Council. Donington Park secured a 10-year contract to host the British GP at the expense of current hosts Silverstone and is due to stage its first Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1993 in July next year. Silverstone, which is owned by the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), stalled over signing a new deal and F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone was impressed by Mr Gillett's plans to redevelop Donington.
