Dario Gradi believes his own training methods will make Crewe a fitter team when the season begins in August.

The Alex manager will take charge of his first pre-season since 2006 after replacing Gudjon Thordarson in October.

Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "Training of any kind is very specific whatever you do, whether it's swimming, short runs, long runs or weight training.

"We've got to try and do an overall fitness regime, so their performance is better and they don't tire so easily."

Several Crewe players have been at the club twice a week during the summer to maintain their fitness levels, ahead of their return to full training on Thursday.

Four new signings - Lee Bell, Antoni Sarcevic, David Artell and Rhys Taylor - are also set to join up with the squad for the pre-season programme.

The Alex finished 18th in League Two last season, their first campaign back in the bottom tier of the Football League for 15 years.
