Geoff Thomas made 155 appearances in two spells with Crewe Alexandra
Former Crewe and England midfielder Geoff Thomas thinks his former team will avoid relegation to League Two this season.
Thomas told BBC Radio Stoke new manager Gudjon Thordarson has made a big impression at the Alex.
"I thought they were were destined for going back into the lower reaches, just like the old days," said Thomas.
"But the new guy has come in, they've had some great results, and fingers crossed they can keep that run going."
Thomas started his career at Rochdale, but came to prominence with Crewe under Dario Gradi.
The 44-year-old had spells with Crystal Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley and Notts County, before ending his career at the Alexandra Stadium.
In 2003 he was diagnosed with leukaemia, and after successfully beating the disease, he has raised around £1m for leukaemia research through the Geoff Thomas Foundation.
He has completed the gruelling Tour de France course twice, and will attempt to do so again in 2009.
