Reading striker David Mooney has agreed to join Colchester United in a six-month loan deal.
The 25-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium in 2008 and has made four appearances, all in the League Cup.
U's boss John Ward told BBC Essex: "David's a player I know well. I tried to sign him from Cork City when I was at Carlisle.
"But Reading gazumped me and he went there. He's a striker in the mould of Steven Gillespie."
He added: "He's been out on loan at Charlton and Norwich recently so has a good pedigree.
"He's with us for six months and will be able to play in the cups as well so I think it's a really good addition to our squad."
Mooney has had a series of short-term moves since joining Reading from Irish club Cork City.
He played twice for Stockport in January 2009 and two months later scored three goals in nine games for Norwich City.
Charlton loaned the Irishman for most of last season and he went on to score six goals in 31 games.
