Carl Pentney was released by Leicester in May 2010

Colchester United have boosted their goalkeeping options by signing Carl Pentney on a non-contract basis.

The 20-year-old was released by Championship side Leicester City at the end of last season.

Pentney joins as cover for injured first-choice goalkeeper Ben Williams, who will be for two weeks due to an ankle injury.

Mark Cousins will start the season in goal for Colchester, who kick-off their League One campaign at Exeter City.

Pentney made just one substitute appearance in his time at Leicester and spent the end of last season on loan at Zamaretto Premier Division side Leamington.

He has also had loan spells with Ilkeston, Woking and York City and had a pre-season trial with Macclesfield Town.
