Richard Logan scored a late equaliser for Exeter as they battled to an opening day draw with Colchester.
Daniel Nardiello was fouled by David Perkins in the area and Ryan Harley scored the resulting penalty to put the home side in front.
But Anthony Wordsworth nodded in a quick equaliser before smashing in a free-kick to put Colchester ahead.
Exeter battled for an equaliser and eventually found one when Logan fired in from close range.
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "I can't really grumble about a draw when I have watched the game that I have watched.
"Both are very good sides who have tried to play good football, who both want to attack, get forward and have quality in their passing and movement.
"But when you're 2-1 up with a few minutes to go you are looking to win it, but I can't deny Paul Tisdale and his team a point."
