Colchester defender Magnus Okuonghae has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2011/12 season.
The 23-year-old, who has been captaining the U's, only joined them from Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer and has been an ever-present.
Manager Aidy Boothroyd told the club's website: "I think we have a future star on our hands.
"He is in the right place to develop and grow his career."
Boothroyd continued: "He has got all of the raw ingredients to be a top player and he now needs to gain the experience of playing.
"He has taken on the captain's armband without any problems either - sometimes it is too heavy for players, but he is coping very well.
"He is getting better as the season goes on, so I am pleased he has signed a new contract."
Okuonghae started his career at Aldershot and has also played for St Albans, Crawley and Weymouth.
