Charlie MacDonald scored as Brentford dented high-flying Colchester with a much-needed League One win.
MacDonald's goal came in the 15th-minute when he dived to head home an accurate cross from John Bostock.
Ben Strevens went close for the Bees with a half-volley, while MacDonald narrowly missed with a low strike.
Bees goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny denied Kevin Lisbie and Kayode Odejayi in the opening half and saved from Clive Platt in stoppage time.
Colchester United manager, Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Essex:
"We didn't play very well for an hour and we have got into a position in the league, through our performances in the last 15 games, where teams have earned the right to up their performances against us.
"Brentford were running round like they had won the World Cup at the end.
"We got what we deserved and it will be a interesting fixture back at our place."
