Colchester United have had an initial undisclosed bid for Shrewsbury striker Grant Holt rejected.

Holt bagged 28 goals for the League Two side last season and has two years remaining on his contract.

U's chief executive Steve Bradshaw said: "Our first offer was rejected by Shrewsbury but we are still in negotiations to get him on board.

"We are very keen to bring him in but there is obviously a line that we won't cross financially."
