Colchester snap up Imps defender

Lee Beevers
Beevers was Lincoln's longest-serving player, having joined in 2005

Colchester United have signed defender Lee Beevers on a free transfer from League Two side Lincoln City.

The 25-year-old, who started his career at Ipswich, has agreed a two-year contract and will officially become a U's player on 1 July.

Beevers, who was Lincoln's longest-serving player, turned down a new deal.

The U's have also been boosted by Republic of Ireland international full-back Alan Maybury's decision to sign a new deal with the club.

Beevers told BBC Essex that Colchester United manager Paul Lambert was influential in his decision to complete the move: "After speaking to the manager, it was an easy choice in the end.

"Motherwell came in for me and I went up there, there were a few offers on the table but at the end of the day Colchester was the place where I wanted to go and play my football."

The former Wales under-21 international is thrilled at the chance to play in a higher division.

He added: "I just can't wait to get started, the set-up is fantastic, and I can't see why we can't succeed this year."
