Colchester striker Clive Platt believes their improved form stems from an ingrained belief they cannot be beaten.
The U's have not lost in nine games in League One, a run which has moved them to the edge of the top ten.
Platt told BBC Essex much of this is due to manager Paul Lambert's never-say-die attitude.
"We're grinding out results and in some games, even if we're not playing brilliantly, we've got this mentality now that we won't get beaten," he said.
Lambert took charge of the Essex club last October with the side languishing in 20th place and Platt feels his influence on the whole side has been hugely significant.
"The defence has stepped up its game and we're getting a lot more clean sheets," he said.
But it's not just the back four that's doing that. The rest of the team is defending a lot better.
"We're defending as a team and we're attacking as a team."
