Colchester United manager Geraint Williams was relieved to see his side end their losing cup run on Tuesday.
The U's had lost four consecutive cup ties to League Two opposition before their 1-0 Carling Cup first-round victory at Gillingham.
Williams told BBC Essex: "I've thanked the lads - that's my first ever cup victory, everyone did really well.
"Fair play to the lads, they worked hard, kept a clean sheet and we are in the next round."
