Chesterfield have strengthened their midfield by bringing in Simon Whaley until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old signed for Norwich from Barnsley last summer but only made three league starts before being released in January.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Sheffield: "I'm pleased that eventually I've got him.
"I've always liked him as a player. His career has come to a bit of a standstill but I know what he can do."
Sheridan added: "He did very well in the Championship with Preston and obviously went for big money to Norwich and things just haven't figured out for him."
"Hopefully he'll come in, work hard and add to what we've already got."
Whaley has already had loan spells at Bradford and Rochdale this season.
